Sights, attractions
Budapest's biggest attractions include Buda Castle and Gellért Hill, as well as the entire Buda Castle District. The castle built on the hills was rebuilt by the Habsburg dynasty during the 18th century, after it was destroyed by the Turks in 1686. The Buda Castle and the Fisherman's Bastion are currently adding to the list of Unesco World Heritage sights together with the Danube bank. The world heritage area stretches from the Margit Bridge to the Freedom Bridge, and on the Buda side includes the historic building complex, Gellért Hill with the Statue of Liberty and the Citadel, as well as the popular Gellért Baths. Also part of the heritage are the most characteristic buildings belonging to the Pest side of the coast, including the impressively sized Parliament House (Parliament) built in an eclectic style, the neo-Renaissance headquarters of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Art Nouveau masterpiece Gresham Palace. Last but not least one should mention Pesti Vigadó too. In addition, the Matthias Church, the National Széchény Library, the National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum are also worth seeing in the Buda Castle District.
If you still have some time left, you can also visit the well-known Andrássy Sreet to admire the various architectural masterpieces. Examples include the Opera House designed by Miklós Ybl, the Neo-Renaissance Academy of Music or the Art Nouveau Fashion Hall. You can also find the Museum of Fine Arts at the end of Andrássy Sreet and the Hősök Tere together with the Millennium Monument. For those interested in the most formative moments of Hungarian history, we highly recommend viewing the statues. If you would like to have some more relaxing and pampering sightseeing, we also recommend visiting the Széchenyi Spa, trying out the Turkish baths in the 7th district, or even taking a visit to Hévíz. In other regions of the country, it is definitely worth seeing the Basilica in Esztergom, the National Park in Hortobágy, the Pannonhalmi Abbey or the Hungarian Openair Museum in Szentendre. It is also recommended to visit the surroundings of Lake Balaton or visit another Unesco World Heritage sight, the wine region of Tokaj.

Museums
Anyone who visits Budapest should definitely visit the Buda Castle District, which houses many museums within its walls. The Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum are also located here. Furthermore, even the National Széchény Library is located here, with all the Hungarian works ever published among its shelves. In the Museum of Fine Arts - situated at the end of Andrássy Sreet - there are always temporary exhibitions in addition to the permanent ones. The House of Terror Museum is also located in Andrássy Street. In terms of museums Andrássy favors both art and history lovers.
Those who want to learn more about Jewish culture should visit the Jewish Local History Collection of Elisabethtown in Csányi Street or the Synagogue in Dohány Street. In Kazinczy Street, next to Dob Street, there is the Electrotechnical Museum, and in Hársfa Street there is one of the largest Stamp Museums in Europe.
For those who want a little more excitement and would like to 'visit' places even under the ground, we recommend visiting the Underground Railway Museum and the Rock Hospital Nuclear Bunker Museum.
The Ethnography Museum awaits its visitors in a new, modern building in Városliget, while the Ludwig Museum awaits visitors -lovers of contemporary art - in the 9th district near the National Theatre. Theater lovers should visit the Bajor Gizi Actors' Museum located a little further into the 12th district, in Sromfeld Aurél Street, where the museum itself is housed in the former home of the actress.
